The GEM worked with Baltimore Gas and Electric project team members to establish a change management plan that would support the design, testing, training and implementation of new technology. The change management plan succeeded because it was designed to fit the culture and project objectives. The results included:
- Development of a Change Management Methodology Plan
- Documentation of As-Is and To-Be business practices in GEMWorX FlowModeler® for effective sharing of business process knowledge
- Identification of training requirements for approximately 1500 trainees
- Delivery of train the trainer courses

Project: Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) Tool Selection
Client: Pepco
Potomac Electric Power Company (Pepco) engaged GEM to deliver a comprehensive plan to initiate the use of EAI tools. GEM was selected in a competitive bid process that included Anderson Consulting (Accenture), Deloitte Consulting, IBM Global Services, KEMA Consulting, PWC, and several other consulting firms. Among the key deliverables that were performed for Pepco:
- Evaluated technical and business requirements
- Determined viable vendors
- Prepared Request for Proposal and review RFP responses
- Developed initial implementation plan

Project: Development of Integration Strategy for Distribution Systems
Client: Minnesota Power
GEM developed a Distribution Systems Integration Strategy that will provide a roadmap for integrating new system options into Minnesota Power’s existing information technology environment while improving key work processes. The GEM team conducted a full review of the processes and technologies related to New Service, Outage Restoration, Line Inspection and Restoration, and Major Capital Projects. The results of the Distribution System Integration Strategy included:
- Provided an assessment of existing applications and interfaces
- Developed work processes to take advantage of new technology and enhanced integration
- Constructed technological approaches and options for meeting integration objectives
- Delivered a comprehensive Integration Strategy plan which addressed:
- Business case costs and benefits
- Integration team recommendations
- Change management and training recommendations

Project: Middleware Analysis
Client: (Confidential)
GEM provided unbiased technical knowledge for the middleware evaluation and practical experience to develop adapters and perform the conversion of a core information processing application to a middleware capable language (Java). GEM executed the proof of concept project which enabled the company’s personnel to make the final decision concerning the use of the middleware. GEM contributed to the project:
- Conducted the selection review
- Prepared and delivered TIBCO training.
- Created the internal design procedures
- Developed custom TIBCO Appender and Mail Appender services for log4j.
- Wrote new Java applications
- Converted Smalltalk applications to Java

Project: Outage
Management System and Work Force Management System Testing
Client: Baltimore Gas and Electric
GEM worked with BGE to lead the testing on the OMS, and was subsequently asked to lead the integration testing of the OMS and WFMS systems. GEM was a leader or an active participant in the following activities:
- Developed the OMS testing strategy
- Designed the testing database and tracking reports
- Managed the team of test plan writers
- Managed the testing activities for Factory Acceptance, Site Acceptance, and Final Acceptance Testing
- Designed and wrote the OMS Performance Testing scenarios
- Coordinated the performance test for the OMS system

Project: Enterprise Application Integration
Client: Potomac Electric Power Company
GEM was engaged to serve as PEPCO’s EAI Systems Integrator and prepare the Pepco IT organization to integrate a wide range of corporate applications. To assist Pepco in establishing EAI as a core technology within Pepco, GEM led or participated in the following activities:
- Training in objected oriented programming and EAI tools
- Preparation of the technical infrastructure to support integration
- A pilot project to identify and refine development practices
- Define development processes and standards
- Define business events and map business data
- Develop custom adapters
